Staggered fitment, explained properly
Wider tires on the back than the front — that is the whole definition. The interesting parts are when it helps, what it costs, and the two rules that separate a sorted setup from an expensive mistake.
Square: same size at all four corners — how every factory Charger ships, Hellcats included. Rotation stays possible; behavior stays neutral.
Rule 01
Match the diameters — the 1% rule
Your speedometer, ABS, traction and stability control all assume the four tires roll the same distance per revolution. Keep front and rear overall diameters within about 1% and everything stays honest. Drift past 2% and the speedo reads wrong, and stability control starts making decisions on bad data.
This is exactly why the classic pairs are what they are: as the tire gets wider, the aspect ratio drops to keep the diameter constant. 245/45R20 pairs with 275/40R20 — not 275/45R20. Check any pairing:
// Stagger check — will these two sizes play nice?
Rule 02
The wheel decides, not the tire
A wider tire only grips more if the wheel spreads it properly. Pinch a 275 onto an 8-inch rim and the tread crowns in the middle — less rubber on the road than the narrower tire you replaced. Before any stagger, check your wheels against the windows:
| Tire size | Rim width range | Happiest on | Common role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 235/55R18 | 6.5–8.5″ | 7.5″ | Factory SXT / R/T |
| 245/45R20 | 7.5–9.5″ | 8–8.5″ | Scat Pack square · stagger front |
| 275/40R20 | 9–11″ | 9.5–10″ | Hellcat square · stagger rear |
| 305/35R20 | 10–12″ | 11″ | Widebody square · big rear |
The trade-offs, honestly
What staggering costs you
Rotation is over
Fronts stay front, rears stay rear. On a driven Mopar the rears die young and alone — budget for rears at roughly twice the front’s pace.
Balance shifts
When the rear out-grips the front, understeer creeps in at the limit. Fine for straight-line heroes; road-course drivers often prefer square for exactly this reason.
Two sizes forever
Two different replacement schedules, two prices, and no swapping a good rear to the front in a pinch. The look and the launch pay for it — just know the bill.
Why factory monsters ship square: even Hellcats leave the factory with matching sizes. It keeps rotation possible, inventory simple, and handling neutral. Staggering is a choice, not an upgrade path everyone must climb — and on factory-width wheels, a stickier compound beats a wider size every time. That is not a compromise; it is the physics of contact patches.
