Can I run wider tires on just the rear?

Yes. Wider rears with matched overall diameters is exactly what a staggered setup is. Keep front and rear diameters within about 1 percent so the speedometer, ABS, and stability control keep reading the road correctly, and accept that front-to-rear rotation ends the day you stagger.

Do rear tires wear faster on a staggered car?

On a rear-drive staggered car the rears do all the driving and can never rotate away their wear, so they age on a different clock. Budget for roughly two rear replacements for every set of fronts and the bill stops surprising you.

Is a staggered setup safe on AWD?

Treat it as a no unless the factory did it. All-wheel-drive systems expect near-identical rolling diameters at every corner, and even a small front-to-rear variance loads the driveline. The factory AWD staggers in our database are engineered and calibrated as packages. Check any pairing before committing.

Who decides which rim widths a tire allows?

Standards bodies, not opinions. The Tire and Rim Association in the US and ETRTO in Europe publish the approved rim-width ranges that tire manufacturers print in their data sheets, and the placard on your door jamb is the per-car law that outranks everything, this site included.
