Sec. 01 · Learn the language
A tire size is three measurements, not a code
305 = tread width in millimetres · 35 = sidewall height as a percentage of that width · R20 = radial construction on a 20-inch wheel. Two sizes with the same overall diameter are speedometer-compatible — that is the whole game in staggering.
Every size on a sidewall — 305/35R20, 245/45R20 — is just width / sidewall % / wheel size. Once you can read it, the two questions that rule every staggered setup become answerable:
- Do the front and rear diameters match? Within 1% or your speedometer and stability control get lied to. Our stagger calculator checks any pairing in seconds.
- Is the wheel wide enough for the tire? A wide tire pinched on a narrow rim crowns in the middle and grips less. Width windows are in the guide.
